Volunteers are vital to our mission of caring for homeless dogs and cats we would not be able to provide the care needed without the commitment, dedication, and reliability of volunteers who invest their time and energy!

VOLUNTEER ORIENTATIONS

Those interested in working with our organization and the animals we care for are required to attend at least one volunteer orientation before working in the shelter facility. Volunteer orientations occur on the fourth Wednesday of every other month at the Veteran’s Benefit Center located at 12 Emerson Ave. in Gloucester from 6pm to 8pm. Please see our upcoming events webpage for the date and time of the next volunteer orientation.

Volunteer orientation gives perspective volunteers a chance to meet with CAAA staff and current volunteers, learn about different volunteer opportunities, duties and more about our organization as a whole.

The second hour of the orientation features an educational and interactive canine body language and behavior presentation given by Helene Budrow of Cape Ann Veterinary Hospital and Hardscrabble Canines.

The canine education portion of our orientations are open to the public and even those who do not wish to volunteer with our organization but would like to expand their knowledge about the canines in their life are welcome and encouraged to attend. Those interested in working soley with felines at the CAAA are not required to stay for this presentation but are welcome to do so.

VOLUNTEER REQUIREMENTS

We ask that volunteers make a commitment to the CAAA of at least six months (although many volunteers stay with us for much longer). The work of volunteers (and of staff) goes on 365 days a year. Volunteers sign up for a 1 hour shift, at the same time and day of each week.

Children under the age of 17 are welcome to volunteer but are considered Junior volunteers and must be accompanied by a parent or guardian at all times while volunteering. This parent or guardian must also attend the volunteer orientation with the child.

There are several roles in which volunteers can fill to assist with the day to day oporations of the Cape Ann Animal Aid. Some activities involve working directly with the dogs and cats waiting for new homes. Other tasks indirectly assist the animals, but are still critical to their well-being and the success of our mission. Whatever you choose to do will make a huge difference!
