VOLUNTEER AT CAPE ANN ANIMAL AID

Thank you for your interest in volunteering at Cape Ann Animal Aid!

We are blessed to have a community filled with so many passionate and giving people who want to volunteer in our shelter! Unfortunately, because of our small size, we have been unable to accommodate this large influx of interest in a timely manner.

At this time, we have a large waiting list of people interested in volunteering here in the shelter and will not be collecting new names for our waiting until the beginning of August, 2010. We apologize for this inconvenience and are looking forward to the construction of our new facility, which will allow us to accommodate more volunteers.

You can still support Cape Ann Animal Aid though your volunteer effort!

The following is a list of opportunities you can complete outside of the shelter to benefit the animals in our care by raising funds or collecting supplies. We encourage both children and adults to get involved in these projects.

If you are volunteering to meet a specific amount of community service hours, please email us at: info@CapeAnnAnimalAid.com to receive a Community Service Projects packet with important information.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION & GUIDELINES

  • Children should have proper adult supervision and should ask their parent or guardian before beginning any volunteer project.
  • If you plan to organize any projects marked with an asterisk*, please send an email to our shelter so we are aware. We may receive phone calls asking about the event and we want to be able to provide the appropriate information.
  • Please contact our shelter if you have any questions or concerns. We may be able to provide you with a copy of our logo for promotional reasons and can offer suggestions and ideas to help you with your project.

ORGANIZE A BAKE SALE/HAVE A LEMONADE STAND*
Organize a bake sale at your school, church, or office. Recruit people to help you make delicious treats and sell them at the bake sale. You can also set up a lemonade stand in front of your house or in your neighborhood. Advertise that the money collected at the bake sale or lemonade stand will be donated to Cape Ann Animal Aid. You might consider making posters to advertise these events in advance. Before planning to host one of these events, remember to seek permission at the desired location in advance.

HAVE A YARD SALE*
Organize a yard sale to benefit Cape Ann Animal Aid. You may even consider inviting your neighbors to join you as well. This is a great opportunity to clean out and organize your house while raising money and awareness for Cape Ann Animal Aid.

You should make posters to advertise the yard sale in advance. Remember to write that the sale benefits Cape Ann Animal Aid and include the time, date, and location. It’s very important to remove your advertising signs after the yard sale.

PENNY WARS
Organize a penny war in your school, office, or neighborhood.  Penny wars can be a lot of fun and can raise a lot of money for the shelter with little effort. In a penny war, two or more groups compete to win a fundraising competition. Decide ahead of time if a prize will be given to the winning group. Each group has a bucket for collecting coins or dollar bills. The value of any pennies collected by a group count positively toward that group's point total, while the value of other coins or dollar bills are subtracted.

For example, in a competition between Group A and Group B, a contributor who wants Group A to win will place pennies into Group A's bucket and nickels, dimes, quarters, or dollar bills into Group B's bucket. At the end of a designated amount of time (usually a few days or a week) the winning group is declared! All of the money collected is then donated to Cape Ann Animal Aid.

MAKE GIFTS FOR SHELTER DOGS/CATS
Pick any of the following projects to complete for the shelter dog or cats.

Sock Cat Toy
Supplies: Infant or child’s cotton sock, polyester fiberfill, non-toxic permanent magic marker, needle and thread and/or Velcro. Optional: Catnip or small craft bells
Directions:
1) Optional: Stuff the toe of the sock with catnip or a craft bell.
2) Follow with the polyester fiberfill for stuffing.
3) Fill to the start of the ribbing on the sock.
4) Tuck the ribbing into the sock top.
5) Sew the top closed or sew Velcro to inside of sock.
6) Decorate sock with non-toxic magic markers so no kitty can resist them.

Cat Hammocks
Visit this website for detailed step by step instructions to make cat hammocks:

‘Adopt Me’ Bandanas
These colorful bandanas can be worn by shelter dogs and cats to get noticed by potential adopters!
Supplies: Colored fabric/permanent non-toxic markers, Solid-color bandanas.
Directions:
1) Place the folded bandana on the table. Draw only on the side that faces up.
2) Your bandanas should be colorful and fun. It’s a good idea to include some words or phrases on your bandanas. (Examples: “Adopt Me!”, “I’ll be your best friend!”, “Help me find a home!”)
3) When finished, lay the bandana flat for a bit to make sure the design doesn’t smear.

GROW AND DONATE CAT GRASS
Cat grass is nutritionally beneficial for cats and they enjoy eating it. Visit your local pet store and ask about cat grass seeds or growing kits. Once you grow a container of cat grass, you can donate to our shelter cats.

THROW A PRIVATE PARTY TO BENEFIT C.A.A.A
Have a birthday coming up? Looking for a reason to get your friends and family together? Want to celebrate a special occasion? You can throw a party to benefit Cape Ann Animal Aid for any reason! Here’s how:
1) Decide on a theme and reason for your party.
2) Send invitations to your guest list (friends, family, classmates etc.)
3) If it’s a birthday party for you, ask for a donation to CAAA or for items off of our Wish List instead of presents.
4) If the party is just for fun, let the attendees know that your having the party to benefit CAAA and invite them to bring a donation or items off of our Wish List.
5) After the party, make sure you send a quick thank you to all who attended for being so generous.
Depending on party size, Cape Ann Animal Aid may be able to supply you with a “Party Pack” with information about our shelter and goodie bag materials such as key chains, stickers, and pens. Please contact us for more information about “Party Pack” availabilities.

ORGANIZE A “PAWS AFLOAT” CAMPAIGN
Our Paws Afloat Campaign is an effect way to involve your co-workers, clients, students, classmates, or youth groups in contributing to Cape Ann Animal Aid. If you’d like to conduct a Paws Afloat campaign, please email us for more information and materials, including the life ring template.
Here’s how it works:
1) Your group accepts modest individual donations in exchange for each “life ring”. (Donations can  be $1.00-$10.00 depending on size and dynamics of the group)
2) The donor puts their name and/or their pet’s name inside the blank box on the life ring and adds it to a display of posted life rings on a wall, bulletin board, or window.
3) At the end of the campaign, your group sends the proceeds to CAAA
4) Before taking down the life rings, we’d love an emailed digital photo of campaign organizers in front of the display for possible publication in our newsletter.
